You can back up Azure VMs using a couple of methods:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Single Azure VM: The instructions in this article describe how to back up an Azure VM directly from the settings.<\/li><li>Multiple Azure VMs: You can set up a Recovery Services vault and configure backup for multiple Azure VMs. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"before-you-start\"><strong>Before you start<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Learn&nbsp;how backup works, and&nbsp;verify&nbsp;support requirements.<\/li><li>Get an overview&nbsp;of Azure VM backup.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"azure-vm-agent-installation\"><strong>Azure VM agent installation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To back up Azure VMs, Azure Backup installs an extension on the VM agent running on the machine. If your VM was created from an Azure Marketplace image, the agent will be running. In some cases, for example if you create a custom VM, or you migrate a machine from on-premises, you might need to install the agent manually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If you do need to install the VM agent manually, follow the instructions for&nbsp;Windows&nbsp;or&nbsp;Linux&nbsp;VMs.<\/li><li>After the agent is installed, when you enable backup, Azure Backup installs the backup extension to the agent. It updates and patches the extension without user intervention.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"back-up-from-azure-vm-settings\"><strong>Back up from Azure VM settings<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sign in to the&nbsp;Azure portal.<\/li><li>Select&nbsp;<strong>All services<\/strong>&nbsp;and in the Filter, type&nbsp;<strong>Virtual machines<\/strong>, and then select&nbsp;<strong>Virtual machines<\/strong>.<\/li><li>From the list of VMs, select the one you want to back up.<\/li><li>On the menu, select&nbsp;<strong>Backup<\/strong>.<\/li><li>In&nbsp;<strong>Recovery Services vault<\/strong>, do the following:<ul><li>If you already have a vault, select&nbsp;<strong>Select existing<\/strong>, and select a vault.<\/li><li>If you don&#8217;t have a vault, select&nbsp;<strong>Create new<\/strong>. Specify a name for the vault. It&#8217;s created in the same region and resource group as the VM. You can&#8217;t modify these settings when you enable backup directly from the settings.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"284\" height=\"117\" src=\"https:\/\/www.testpreptraining.ai\/tutorial\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/vm-menu-enable-backup-small-1.png\" alt=\"Learn to Back up an Azure VM from the VM settings\" class=\"wp-image-14927\"\/><figcaption>Image Source &#8211; Microsoft<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;<strong>Choose backup policy<\/strong>, do one of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Leave the default policy. You can start the initial backup immediately, or wait until it starts in accordance with the backup schedule.<ul><li>Until the initial backup completes, the&nbsp;<strong>Last backup status<\/strong>&nbsp;shows as&nbsp;<strong>Warning (Initial backup pending)<\/strong>.<\/li><li>To see when the next scheduled backup will run, select the backup policy name.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"run-a-backup-immediately\"><strong>Run a backup immediately<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To run a backup immediately, in the VM menu, select&nbsp;<strong>Backup<\/strong>&nbsp;&gt;&nbsp;<strong>Backup now<\/strong>.<\/li><li>In&nbsp;<strong>Backup Now<\/strong>, use the calendar control to select until when the recovery point will be retained &gt; and&nbsp;<strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li><li>Portal notifications let you know the backup job has been triggered.
